To
be seen by the search engines you must use keywords on your home page.
The words should be relevant to your business, organisation or topic
and help people to find you. It is an important marketing tool.
Make a list of about 50 words which best describes your website and
they are added to the head content of your index page.
Go to the top of your Objects Palette - select the word ’Common’
at the top and hold down to select ‘Head’. A small box will
appear with various symbols shown. Select the key symbol and a further
box will appear where you will type in your 50 words.
Look at the HTML and you will see this information has been added to
the head content in a meta tag. This is the information which will be
read by the search engines and guide people to your site.
Other
marketing considerations:
Over 50% of people using the internet DO NOT USE SEARCH ENGINES. This
is partly because they are not quick and easy to use. Web visitors who
are not regular users bring up thousands of responses to a request,
which they do not have time to trawl through.
Latest American research show that typically surfers visit only the
first three results from their inquiry and make instantaneous judgements
about whether to stay on a site, and if a site doesn’t give the
right impression users will bypass it. This research carried out in
June 2003 by researchers of the Penn State School of Information Sciences
and Technology (IST) analysed more than 450,000 web queries submitted
to the AlltheWeb.com search engine in a 24-hour period. More than half
the users checked out only one result and more than 80% stopped after
looking at three results.
So it is important to advertise your site through all forms of media
- newspapers, magazines, radio, television, posters, on buses, lorries,
on business cards, letterheads and most important of all by word of
mouth.
Try
to choose a relevant domain name - or something that really sticks in
people‘s minds. Do not be afraid of using your full name of your
organisation.
Keep
it simple
