THE ARPANET AGE

1967 - ARPA computer scientist, Roberts designs a fast,
decentralised network built on dial-up telephone lines.

1969 - The first four ARPA networks hosts across four American universities are connected across 50kbps (thousands of bits, or kilobits, per second) lines. At Bell Labs, Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie invent Unix, the operating system destined to become the bedrock of the Internet. Telnet is born, allowing people to log into and control computers from a remote terminal.

1972 - Ray Tomlinson writes the first email program and starts the use of the @ sign in email addresses.

1973 - The ARPA network goes global - US links with London and Norway

1975 - Microsoft is founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen to
produce software for microcomputers.

1978 - The TCP protocol is split into two parts, creating the new Internet Protocol (IP). Networks using this protocol became known as internets; together they form the wider Internet.
