SCREEN SIZE AND MEASUREMENTS

Once you’ve selected your basic colours, you can use variations for other elements on the page depending on the content as well as the size of your website.

For example, if you use a basic colour of green, use lighter and darker shades of green for other elements of the page - but then find a complementary and contrasting colour (a deep tan, or gold, perhaps) for a really important item on the page.

Screen size - design your website for a screen size to suit your visitor. The business market usually goes for 800 w x 600h (with an image size of 760 x 420) whereas for the home market you should go for the smaller 14inch monitors 640w x 480h (with an image size of 600x300).

Measure in pixels - the size of a pixel depends on the screen resolution. On an Apple Macintosh the optimum resolution is 72 pixels per inch - on a PC the resolution is 96 pixels per inch (one third larger) so this is important to remember in designing your pages.

It also tells you that you must test your pages in various browsers including Explorer - which acts as a PC - and Navigator - which acts as an Apple Macintosh. The new Apple Macintosh web browser, Safari, is becoming increasingly popular.
