DEFINING YOUR WEBSITE
Having set up your basic folder structure, you must now type in some
essential information to further assist the Internet ‘eye’
to locate your website on your computer. We describe this as Defining
your Site.
Remember there are millions of computers linked to the Internet, so
this information is essential so that visitors can be guided to your
individual website.
Go
up to the Dreamweaver menu Site > Edit Sites and you will see a dialogue
box offering a number of options. Select the new button in the top right
corner.
You will then be taken to the ‘Site Definition dialogue box (pictured
right). Note that the box title says Site Definition for unnamed site
1 when you first open it.
Advanced tab
Under the title there are two tabs - select Advanced.
Then under the Category heading (top left) highlight
Local info. Move to the boxes on the right.
Fill in the Site Name with the name of your Root folder
... in my example here it is julieweb and it must be typed in exactly
as it is typed in the folder name; all lowercase letters and no spaces
In the Local Root Folder box, place your cursor then
select the small folder icon on the right and search for and select
your Root folder on your hard drive.
Tick
the small box: Refresh local file list automatically.
In the Default Images folder box,
place your cursor then select the small folder icon on the right and
search for and select your pix folder inside your Root folder. The reason
you are requested to supply this particular piece of information is
because some of your visitors will select an option i their browsers
which allows them NOT to download any pictures and see only
a text version of your pages. So. the internet must know where your
poictures are kept in order to 'hide' them.
In the HTTP Address box if you have bought a domain
name, type it in here.
Tick
the Cache box to enable a cache to be built. This is
a valuable area of local memory for everything that resides on your
website and must be regularly refreshed. (Site > Recreate Site Cache).
Click
OK.
