THINK
OF YOUR COMPUTER AS A FILING CABINET
A
comparison:
To make it simpler, you might think of your computer as a filing cabinet.
To file away your paperwork, you divide your filing cabinet into different
drawers.
In the computer world, the filing cabinet is the hard disk. A hard disk
can be divided into separate areas called directories (or folders).
The drawers in the filing cabinet represent the sub-directories on the
hard disk. In each drawer or sub-directory, a number of grouped documents
are placed to make retrieval easier.
Extras:
To listen to music, use sound effects, or use an Internet Phone, you’ll
need and internal sound card, microphone and speakers or headphones.
Standard Macintosh computers come with reasonable sound capability but
with PCs it’s usually an extra.
Without special video hardware, you may be disappointed with the short
movies on websites as they will only appear matchbox size on your screen.
If you want high quality images and movies, you will have to consider
a graphics upgrade option like an accelerator card, extra RAM and a
MPEG movie card.
Introducing
Mac!
Apple Macintosh computers, or Macs, work in a similar way to PCs and
often run the same programs, but they have a different and non-compatible
operating system so you cannot assume that the same software will run
on both machines. It is also difficult to transfer data from a Mac floppy
disc to a PC.
Software:
Most personal computers come with a varied package of programs (known
as bundled software) which will nearly always include Microsoft Office.
Office comprises several individual programs (Word, Excel, Powerpoint
,Outlook and Front Page). Later in this Guide we will be using Word
for our Arabic translation.
We
will also be working in another software package called Macromedia Studio
MX , which has different versions for PC and Mac. This is a suite of
software for website development and includes Flash, Dreamweaver, Fireworks
and Freehand. We will be working specifically with Dreamweaver to design
and build our web pages and Fireworks to prepare pictures for the web.
