BUSINESS TOURISM LIFESTYLE REBUILD GOVERNMENT HOME

Action on the Beaches

A Beach Wardens and Lifesavers scheme is now running as part of the Lumley Beach Development Project, not only to watch for disasters at sea, but also to prevent the theft of property on the beach.

Six observation posts have been built along the beach similar to the one pictured right, and the operators watch with binoculars and communications sets to spot disasters at sea and on land. They report to teams of trained and professional Life Safety Patrolmen who patrol both on foot and by boat.

With funds received from Action Aid, an NGO, a focal point has been established on Lumley beach in the form of a Tourist Information Centre which houses an Internet cafe, a souvenir shop, general information booths for visitors and also a police post. Public toilets and showers have also been built on the beach which is one of the most heavily frequented areas on the outskirts of Freetown.

Hotel and entertainment facilities will be developed during the next few years to boost the tourist industry around Freetown.

One hour away, No 2 River beach pictured below has breathtaking natural beauty and the No 2 River Development Association, a local community project, has built a guest house with en suite bathrooms, a restaurant, craft shops, toilets and beach huts to a high standard for visiting tourists. George Hope, pictured left is one of the principals of the scheme and is hoping that the complex will grow as the number of visitors increases.
