A project has been
developing to improve the quality of African handicrafts made in Sierra
Leone. The emphasis has been gara, tie dye batik, ethnic jewellery,
carving, handwoven cloth and looms and cultural paintings.
Sierra Leone Export
Development and Investment Corporation (SLEDIC) is
training targeted womens groups through workshops on the proper application
of dyes, selection of quality fabrics.modern design techniques and tailoring
symmetry.
Now, following the
African Growth and Opportunity Act, SLEDIC is organising the handicraft
producers, particularly those in gara, batik, woven cloth and looms
to benefit by arranging a relationship with US yarn exporters.
