A crafty way forward

A project has been developing to improve the quality of African handicrafts made in Sierra Leone. The emphasis has been gara, tie dye batik, ethnic jewellery, carving, handwoven cloth and looms and cultural paintings.

Sierra Leone Export Development and Investment Corporation (SLEDIC) is training targeted womens groups through workshops on the proper application of dyes, selection of quality fabrics.modern design techniques and tailoring symmetry.

Now, following the African Growth and Opportunity Act, SLEDIC is organising the handicraft producers, particularly those in gara, batik, woven cloth and looms to benefit by arranging a relationship with US yarn exporters.
