The relationship between the Commonwealth and La Francophonie, the group of French-speaking nations, is a collaborative one. In March 1998 a joint Commomwealth-La Francophonie Group observed the presidential and National Assembly elections in Seychelles at the invitation of the government of that country. From 24 to 26 January 2000, The Commomwealth and the International Organisation of La Francophonie jointly organised a colloquum on 'Democracy in Pluralistic Societies', held in Yaounde, Republic of Cameroon. It was the first time the two organisations, whose membership together comprises more than one-third of the world`s population, had undertaken a joint initiative of this kind. Eighteen participants selected from the 105 combined member states of the two organisations, and nine experts from the host country took part in this conference. The Secretaries-General of both Commonwealth and Francophonie are concerned by the potential for division and conflict that can arise where pluralism is not managed successfully. |
