Co-operation in the area of education By Claude Zesseu Cameroon on Monday March 12 2001 joined 53 other English-speaking nations to celebrate Commonwealth Day. The event was celebrated under the theme 'A New Generation.' The new generation of Commonwealth citizens should strive to promote peace and pool resources to eradicate poverty through the promotion and provision of educational services. More than half a decade since Cameroon joined the Commonwealth of Nations, the country has made substantial gains in the area of educational training. Since 1997, several young and mid-career Cameroonian citizens have received Commonwealth grants awarded by the United Kingdom and Canada to embark on studies in Canada and the UK. Grants are issued for postgraduate studies. To qualify, candidates for the Master degree programme must hold an upper second class Bachelor degree while those applying for Ph.D programmes must have outstanding academic records at the Master degree level. |
