A Cultural Mix

A Cultural Mix brings the music of the black composer Chevalier Saint-Georges alongside his contemporaries Handel and Leclair, who influenced him greatly. This programme also includes works by the exciting twenty-first-century composer Errollyn Wallen.

The Jewish Connection explores some of the chamber music that was composed in London by Jews in the eighteenth century. Although Jews at this time in England had no real rights, London was more liberal than many cities on the continent. Composers such as Cervetto, Haym and Saloman all found success, with Cervetto and Haym both working for the great Mr. Handel.

Handel, like many composers of the day, was not averse to re-using a good tune every now and then. In this concert you will hear many of Handel’s most well-loved tunes, but perhaps not played on the instruments you would expect. These are mostly arrangements by Handel himself, with one or two nineteenth-century additions. An early version of the Water Music forms the core of the programme.

A wild, virtuosic journey from the origins of the trio sonata in Italy to the height of its musical power in England under Handel. This musical grand tour incorporates some of the great chamber works of the eighteenth-century by composers including Corelli, Leclair, Vivaldi, Telemann and Handel..
