Educational projects

January - February 1999
Schools Early Music in West Norfolk

GCSE Music Pupils (years 9-11) from: Hamonds, Marshland, Downham Market, Springwood, King Edward VII, The Park and Smithdon High Schools

A four-week project with pupils studying for GCSE music (from seven schools in West Norfolk) working with The Brook Street Band, composer and educationalist David Bedford and their own class teachers.

Together we explored some of the ideas and techniques used in the composition of early music and applied these to contemporary compositions by the pupils themselves. We developed one work based on a ground bass for all the school groups to perform together, and each group also composed its own piece, based on Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.

The Brook Street band also performed several short early music pieces linked to themes the students have chosen.

This project has been developed with funding from Arts for Everyone Express from the Arts Council of England through the National Lottery.
