Bywaters became the principal contractor for the waste management of Canary Wharf over 10 years ago. Over a period of three years, 13 major buildings and a number of infrastructure projects were built, all using bespoke waste management systems.

Working alongside Canary Wharf Contractors, Bywaters managed the waste from site and were able to assess the quantity and composition generated. Using our Materials Recycling Facility (MRF), we were able to divert over 85% of materials collected away from landfill.

Bywaters was able to service the entire project and meet the demands of fast-track construction by having scheduled drivers and vehicles available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Communication was through the Dolphin System, portable handheld transceivers which allowed easy communication between the Bywaters and Canary Wharf team and a full-time Account Manager was based on-site as a first point of contact for all of the projects.

Each site was assessed and the appropriate equipment was utilised for maximum efficiency and recycling. The work at Canary Wharf led to an award at the National Business Awards in 2003. Bywaters won the Innovation Award in the Southern Regional Final for its bespoke construction chute and compactor system for the Canary Wharf Estate.
